This a short but reflective post this week…
As I wrote in last week, I’ll be writing about some of the things I learned at the Copyblogger Authority Intensive, but I’ll be doing more of over at my newsletter, which you can sign to receive here (plus get some cool extras).
But I need to make a confession…Sometimes I don’t feel like I know it all. Yes, it's true!
That became apparent in Denver a few weeks ago, when I was around the experts of content marketing and some very brilliant practitioners. As I mentioned previously, roughly 400-500 people attended this conference, so there was a lot to compare myself to.
I truly felt that I was on the right side of the intellectual bell curve among those present. That meant being on the lower achieving side, which I was not used to.
At the conference’s second day breakfast buffet, I sat at a round table with four other attendees. One of them was talking about SEO and content marketing that seemed straight out of some Silicon Valley boardroom. All I could do is nod, smile and pretend like I knew what he was talking about.
Of course, I had no idea.
Instead of wallowing in a pure idiotic state, I resolved right then and there to ask questions on things I didn’t know. I queried people on concepts presented for clarification. I discussed further to gain understanding. Even if made me look like a total newbie, I didn’t care.
I still think we need to get over our general trepidation in appearing dumb or ignorant. We often believe a stigma is still attached to asking questions, even when people assure us, “There’s no such thing as a dumb question. Ask away!”
But how often do we really ask, and feel good about it? It should be never, at all.
How do you get over your reluctance to ask questions? Share your thoughts below!
