My family and I will be leaving for New York and Washington, DC, next week. As such, I won’t be posting here but will be over at my travel and photography blog, Californian in Exile. So I’ll see you over there.
Like I did with our trip to Italy and Switzerland last year, I’ll document our trip on a mostly daily basis.
It’ll hopefully be easier this time, as we’ll be in the US and not in a place where the quality and the speed of the internet is a black hole. Also something different this time – my kids will be along for the ride.
Now you’ll have much better pictures with some cute kids to see
About a month ago, we bought an all-purpose pass, which will allow us to bypass a lot of the monstrously long lines at the most popular New York attractions. And we’ve also looked at a few social media travel sites, like Trip Advisor and Yelp.
This has taken advantage of their natural pull to the computer, and gives them a parent-approved activity to spend time on an electronic device. So of course, they were sold.
In particular, we’ve looked at restaurants. We’ve read up on a few of the activities and attractions on both sites, but since the pass has pretty much dictated our itinerary, we’re not paying attention to that category too closely. And even though we will be staying in a Midtown rental with a small kitchen, we’d be silly not to take advantage of the wide culinary offerings around us.
I told my kids and husband that we will try to avoid any fast food, chain or Denver-local restaurants as much as possible. That meant no McDonalds, Wendy’s, Chili’s, Applebee’s or even Chipotle because that place is so common and had originated here.
So we set certain criteria for our search. The restaurants had to be in Midtown or the Upper East Side, so we could reasonably walk to them. They’d have to be moderately priced, in the one to two-dollar sign range.
The result? We’ve been able to find some cool establishments that fit most of the criteria above. Plus, we had fun reading up on some of the more entertaining reviews of the restaurants. For instance, did you know there was a restaurant completely devoted to rice pudding? We absolutely have to go there.
See you next week in New York!
