So no, I didn’t blog while we were on vacation these past 10 days. I apologize for not showing up over there, but it can and does happen.
Now that I’m home, where I can pretty much rely on my online status 95.7% of the time, I’ll be hitting the travel highlights over the next three weeks. You can follow those posts over at Californian in Exile.
This is me, symbolically, when I tried to blog on vacation
I can’t believe the spotty internet we had in Italy were better than what we had in New York and in Delaware. Going online in Zimbabwe probably would’ve been better than what we had.
Granted, our internet setup in Delaware was due to my husband’s cousin under construction home, where we stayed.Incidentally, we did have great connectivity in Washington, DC – I just didn’t have time to sit down and write. Yeah, I know…poor excuse for not blogging.
This post doesn’t relate travel marketing tips as much as it reports suggestions on what to do if you encounter crappy connections. These are pretty obvious strategies, but it's good to be reminded of them when you're super-frustrated as I was.
So here goes:
1.) Do some self-diagnostic stuff first
Reboot your computer, turn your computer's wi-fi on and off, close out programs, empty your cache, clear your search history and the network. See if any of those things help. Or if you’re staying in hotel, simply move to the lobby. This is where the connection is usually the strongest.
2.) Set aside time to find a place and get online
If #1 doesn’t work (especially if you’re staying in a rental like we did), find the nearest wi-fi hotspot. If that means hitting the closest Starbucks or non-corporate coffee house, go for it.
3.) Most of all…don’t get frustrated
Remember, you’re for all intents and purposes, on vacation. Give yourself and break. This is what I did while I was in New York, and later on when there was NO internet at all in Delaware, due to the construction of the house we were staying at. Believe it or not, it was kind of nice being offline for time.
