How important are emails?

As part of my copywriting services, I write emails.  They were the first paid assignments that I snagged, and I find them really fun to write.

But how many businesses, besides the medium to large-sized ones, use it?  My guess is, not that many.

Maybe too many small business think that it's probably a waste of time to send out hundreds or even thousands of emails to their customers, simply because of the supposedly poor return-on-investment (ROI).  Or perhaps they don't have the time to write a few out that could garner customers' interest.  Or they simply just don't know how.

Here are some ways that you can start to write emails the generate more leads for your business:

1.) Keep them short - Nobody likes to read anything that drones on and on.  You'll get far more attention if you keep the message to less than 250-300 words.

2.) Use words like you talk - In other words, be conversational.  Avoid using pedantic language that may sound authoritative but will just send people running.

3.) Write tidy paragraphs - This one is related to the one above.  Shorter paragraphs - ones with less than four lines - will enhance readability and get your message across much quicker.

4.) Tell a story - Or use an illustration that helps make your sales point.  This is one of the best ways you can engage your audience and help them connect your product or service with the positive association of your message.

5.) Include several calls to action - Avoid putting the request for your reader to do something until the very end.  Add links throughout your email to help them along, perhaps even converting them before they reach the email's conclusion.

And there you have it...five ways to help you become a better email marketer.  Now that wasn't so painful, was it?
